I've just received my potato seeds and think I may have over ordered....I ordered 3kg of each variety so will have to allocate 4 beds to spud growing. Not all bad because the spuds will help tp break up my clay soil for next year!!!!!
I though I'd share with you what I am growing;
Maris Piper
A great all-purpose choice
Makes superb chips (as your local take-away will confirm) and is good too for mashing and baking. A reliable general purpose choice with good resistance to eelworm. Maincrop variety. Skin Colour - White. Flesh Colour - Cream. Uses - new, boil, steam, mash, chips, saute, baked and roast.
Dunluce
Superb sweet taste!
A variety that will suit those who do not care for very waxy early potatoes. Dunluce has a superb sweet taste and cream flesh which is soft and a little drier than some. It's a very early variety and suitable for forcing in pots in the greenhouse too. First Early variety. Skin Colour - White. Flesh Colour - Cream. Uses - new, boil, steam, mash, saute and baked
Lady Balfour
A good choice for organic growers!
A Scottish bred variety which has a number of key attributes for garden use. Possessing excellent resistance to some of the major potato diseases including blight, scab and virus Y, Lady Balfour can usually be grown well without chemicals. As it thrives in low fertility situations it can be grown with less artificial fertiliser too. The partly coloured tubers have tasty firm flesh best suited to boiling or baking as 'jackets'. Second Early variety. Skin Colour - White. Flesh Colour - Cream. Uses - boil, steam, mash, saute, baked and roast.
Charlotte
The classic salad potato
Classic salad potato against which others are judged! Matures as a latish first early, producing good numbers of medium sized oval tubers with a very fine flavour. Very waxy when young and perfect hot or cold. Good blight and scab resistance. Award of Garden Merit. A Salad variety. Skin Colour - Yellow. Flesh Colour - Yellow. Uses - new, boil, steam, mash and saute.
I have also received my onion sets namely Sturton & F1 Forum
I have a couple of Blackcurrant bushes established on my ploy and I've decided to add another " healthy " fruit source to the plot and I've chosen;
Aronia Viking
Attractive & super-nutritious!
One of the less well known "superfoods", an aronia would make a worthy addition to any garden. Native to North America, it's a deciduous shrub that likes mild, damp conditions (ideal for ther UK!), with attractive spring blossom, glossy green leaves and brilliant autumn foliage. Its clusters of small, purple-black fruits are too sharp to eat raw, but are delicious in sauces, toppings, juices and smoothies. Plus they're packed with vitamins and boast three times the level of antioxidants found in blueberries!
I've started chitting my spuds now and will have to finish off preparing my beds now...weather permitting !!!!!
