I created a hole in the ground using a stake, back filled with compost and sowed 3 seeds per hole.
Hopefully Ill end up with a strong parsnip seedling which will grow on over Summer giving lovely parsnips in late Autumn.

Just sowed Parsnips

Next to go in were my Red Baron onion sets.....3 rows in one bed and well netted to keep the birds away. Had a problem with white rot last year but not using that bed for onions for a few years now.

I also took the opportunity to sow some Lilia Spring Onions in a large pot in the Greenhouse.
I`ll transplant these outdoors in April when the ground has warmed up.

Lastly I sowed some some Evesham Brussel Sprouts in pots in the greenhouse too.
I has a disaster last year so hopefully with a little more experience i might get a crop in Winter!!!

And nice to see my Aronia Viking fruit bush coming on well after i replanted it in Autumn. It`s only in the second growing season and should provide some high vitamin fruit in the next few years.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; I sowed 2 seeds per "hole" and watered in.
Hopefully the parsnips will grow nicely through the soft compost rather than forcing through my heavy clay.
Time will tell!!!

I visited th Gardens at Tatton Park with the twins yesterday....really enjoyed the visit even if the gardens were still fairly dormant...but well worth a visit if you live nearby.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Another Amelanchier, A. canadensis commonly known as the snowy mespilus, grows extremely well all over the UK.
Saskatoons were a major food crop for the north american indians for centuries, but only recently is their full potential being realised, with the demand for new healthy superfoods.
So I've just put an order in for three 1 year old potted plants and I'll be planting them in as soon as it's safe to do so.

I'll let you know how I get on !!!!

Still digging!!!

With Spring looming on the horizon ( I know the eternal optimist!! ) I still have four beds to dig over and I`m keen to do it before the weather warms up so I can turn the soil over and let some much needed air into my soil.
Looking at the weather forecast ( snow and ice !! ) I took a chance and nipped up to my plot yesterday with Harry ( our little dog!! )..I'm determined to get those beds sorted and although not ideal digging weather I managed to dig one of my beds 14 feet x 4 feet...the soil was so compact and as it is heavy clay it was hard work...this area has clearly been walked on far too much and hopefully the predicted snow and ice will help break down the clumps of clay ( soil!!) before Spring arrives.
Harry was happy running around and somehow managed to unearth a small animal skull!!!! Onions have arrived ...at last !!!

I've just received my potato seeds and think I may have over ordered....I ordered 3kg of each variety so will have to allocate 4 beds to spud growing. Not all bad because the spuds will help tp break up my clay soil for next year!!!!!

I though I'd share with you what I am growing;

Maris Piper

A great all-purpose choice

Makes superb chips (as your local take-away will confirm) and is good too for mashing and baking. A reliable general purpose choice with good resistance to eelworm. Maincrop variety. Skin Colour - White. Flesh Colour - Cream. Uses - new, boil, steam, mash, chips, saute, baked and roast.

Dunluce
Superb sweet taste!

A variety that will suit those who do not care for very waxy early potatoes. Dunluce has a superb sweet taste and cream flesh which is soft and a little drier than some. It's a very early variety and suitable for forcing in pots in the greenhouse too. First Early variety. Skin Colour - White. Flesh Colour - Cream. Uses - new, boil, steam, mash, saute and baked

Lady Balfour
A good choice for organic growers!

A Scottish bred variety which has a number of key attributes for garden use. Possessing excellent resistance to some of the major potato diseases including blight, scab and virus Y, Lady Balfour can usually be grown well without chemicals. As it thrives in low fertility situations it can be grown with less artificial fertiliser too. The partly coloured tubers have tasty firm flesh best suited to boiling or baking as 'jackets'. Second Early variety. Skin Colour - White. Flesh Colour - Cream. Uses - boil, steam, mash, saute, baked and roast.

Charlotte
The classic salad potato

Classic salad potato against which others are judged! Matures as a latish first early, producing good numbers of medium sized oval tubers with a very fine flavour. Very waxy when young and perfect hot or cold. Good blight and scab resistance. Award of Garden Merit. A Salad variety. Skin Colour - Yellow. Flesh Colour - Yellow. Uses - new, boil, steam, mash and saute.

I have also received my onion sets namely Sturton & F1 Forum

I have a couple of Blackcurrant bushes established on my ploy and I've decided to add another " healthy " fruit source to the plot and I've chosen;

Aronia Viking
Attractive & super-nutritious!

One of the less well known "superfoods", an aronia would make a worthy addition to any garden. Native to North America, it's a deciduous shrub that likes mild, damp conditions (ideal for ther UK!), with attractive spring blossom, glossy green leaves and brilliant autumn foliage. Its clusters of small, purple-black fruits are too sharp to eat raw, but are delicious in sauces, toppings, juices and smoothies. Plus they're packed with vitamins and boast three times the level of antioxidants found in blueberries!

I've started chitting my spuds now and will have to finish off preparing my beds now...weather permitting !!!!!
Welcome to my Weedles Wonder Blog

I have just taken over a 1/3 size allotment on the outskirts of Stockport with my Dad.
The plot is around 14 feet wide and around 60 feet in length.
The soil is heavy clay.
This site has been covered by fruit cages for many years and the front 1/3 area is split by paths where various fruit bushes were set.
The remainder has around 10 standard beds 4 feet x 13 feet.
We are going to site a 6 x 8 greenhouse on the front section as we intend to grow as much from seed as we can.
Having inherited the plot in December 2009 I was unable to get on the plot due to the heavy snow.
However by mid January I was able to get on the plot but had to clear barrow fulls of slate, metal and various other strange bits.
The beds were in desperate need of a good digging which I have managed to do over the last week or so with only a few left to attack.
The greenhouse has arrived and we will erect that this week weather permitting.
I'm waiting on my spud seeds to arrive so I can start chitting ( I know I'm a bit late!!)
I have had an allotment some years ago for 2 seasons but had to choose between the allotment and my Man Utd season ticket....the allotment lost but thanks to the Glazer`s continual price increases I gave the season ticket up too and have now been waiting for around 3 years for a plot to come free.
I hope you follow me through the year and post advice and help wherever you seem fit.
See you soon.
<img width='1' height='1'
